The firmware hwOS from heinrichs weikamp is an operating system for dive computers that offers maximum transparency, usability and a wide range of functions. From apnea mode up to multigas calculation with Trimix and Nitrox the users have numerous options, even rebreather divers can use the firmware in many ways for their purposes.
Using Bluetooth or USB, rechargeable or single battery – the firmware hwOS allows to operate dive computers with various hardware.
Sport or technical diver?
The firmware can be operated both with the firmware hwOS sport for sport divers and the firmware hwOS tech for technical divers. If you choose the sport edition initially, the OSTC will stay your companion even if you want to develop yourself in technical diving. For a fee you can get an update and upgrade your OSTC plus into a full trimix dive computer. The tech edition covers all ranges of technical diving including trimix and rebreather diving. The sport edition supports nitrox diving with three gases and is a reliable companion even for challenging dives.
Primarily hwOS is addressed to technical divers and advanced scuba divers that also do demanding deco dives. Therefore you can choose between two decompression models, the classic Bühlmann-algorithm or the more modern version with gradient factors. The decompression models can be configured down to the last detail and can be adjusted to your personal needs without limitation. Rebreather divers may monitor their oxygen levels with sensors or use fixed setpoints. hwOS offers a wide range of additional options including a gauge and apnea mode as well as a digital compass.
Although you have a wide range of configuration options the set menu of hwOS is clearly arranged and can be used intuitively. All values are pre-set in a proven manner and can be reset at any time to default. The custom view offers an overview of all important settings both under water and on the surface. At no time the firmware hwOS patronizes its users, it gives no penalty time or forced diving pauses. The firmware works very efficiently so the dive computers reach extraordinary long runtimes.
The firmware hwOS is based on Open Source concept. The source code is open and can be read and used by everyone. That offers not only maximum transparency but also a practical side effect: With the broad support of the programmer community user requests can be implemented easier and failures can be resolved faster. Programmer can create their own software modules and integrate them into hwOS. For all other users heinrichs weikamp provides steadily updates on the homepage that are tested and reliable. So your dive computer is always up-to-date – of course free of charge.
You can connect the OSTC easily with Bluetooth to your personal computer, notebook or smartphone. So you can upload software and download your logbook. The OSTC works with Bluetooth Smart Ready, depending on the receiver it activates Bluetooth 2.0 or Bluetooth 4.0.
The data transfer is supported by many software applications and logbook programs like OSTC Tools, Diving Log or Subsurface.
Recharging the battery works inductive with the established Qi standard. For recharging just put the dive computer on the delivered charging pad – that´s it.
The wireless handling of the dive computer is easy to use and also offers a great advantage: The OSTC has no openings that could cause leakages. The forgotten cap of the USB connector is now a thing of the past.
The OSTC 4 has an optical port that allows to connect three oxygen sensors via the hwHUD or the ppO2 monitor. Additionally you can control the voltage (mV) of every sensor and the battery.
The connection is based on a fibre optic cable that can be removed and connected also underwater.
With the S8 connector you can directly connect three oxygen sensors to your OSTC cR. Optionally you can use a digital connection via the hw HUD S8.
The S8-connector is triple o-ring sealed. Because of its construction it is very robust. The OSTC cR can be connected to standard oxygen sensors with a common ground. The minimum voltage for calibration is 7 mV in air (21% O2) and 36 mV in pure oxygen (100% O2).
Additionally the S8 connector allows you to control the voltage (mV) of every sensor and the battery.
